    Soul food at its finest

Many Dillard students skip the cafeteria on campus or bypass the fast food and go to Two Sisters Kitchen, a restaurant located at 223 N. Derbigny St. With good food and low prices, Dillard students take advantage of their class breaks to indulge in the food of one of New Orleans’ best restaurants.

"I love it, that’s why I take everyone there and then they love it and I get stuck because all my friends always want to go there," Dominica Purdy, a junior English major, said. "You get a lot of food. You cannot eat that whole plate for $6 or $7 dollars," she added. Purdy said she almost always orders the shrimp and okra.

While Purdy always chooses to indulge in the Two Sisters?shrimp and okra combination, sophomore Candace Walker likes their smothered pork chop plate with macaroni and cabbage.
"I love soul food," Walker, a liberal arts major, said. "I think it has a nice family atmosphere and the prices are reasonable."

On my first visit I arrived at Two Sisters Kitchen fairly late for lunch-about a quarter to five. The restaurant seemed a little empty. Most of the waitstaff had already left for the day and some of the food selections were already gone due to the huge lunch rush that crowds the restaurant between noon and 3 p.m. I could understand that, because the restaurant closes at 6 p.m. and I was one of the few stragglers who came in just before closing. I seated myself at a small table, thinking to myself, no reservations needed here.

The atmosphere was nice and quaint. It reminded me of some ?70s movie where black people would gather after church to eat and relax. Pictures of famous people who ate there, hung along the wall with a single Gambit Weekly article about the restaurant.

The restaurant’s clients were a mixed crowd that varied in age and race; mostly locals I suspect, being that almost everyone I interviewed had been coming here for years.

I was feeling adventurous, so I order a glass of tea and lemonade mixed as friends had recommended I try. The special of the day, smothered rabbit, was my choice for an entrée and a slice of warm cornbread piled with butter. I was immediately given my drink and the food came out less than five minuets later. The plate was filled with rabbit, rice and gravy, yams and cabbage.

This plate was big enough for two and all for seven dollars. The food was delicious, cooked to perfection; this was soul food at its best. No waiting for 30 minutes when you only have an hour lunch break and the bill was less than $10.00. I was truly satisfied with the food and service.

Other than rabbit, the restaurant serves a delicious combination of soul food and seafood on menus that changes daily throughout the week. From Wednesday’s chitterlings to Friday’s seafood, Two Sisters Kitchen is a restaurant that can fit any person’s appetite and budget.

Other locals also find Two Sisters, to be timely and priced reasonably.

"I love it!" Leon Jamison, the owner of Leon’s Auto Repair and a faithful customer for the past 15-years, said. "The food is real good and the service is quick. The prices are real decent and affordable so it makes it possible for a person like me to eat there often."

Some locals find that the food is so good that it is worth the veering off their daily diet.

"I’m a diabetic," Steve Randolph, kitchen manager at Mr. B’s Bistro who had been eating at Two Sisters twice a month for the past five years, said. "I’ll be sick in an hour or two, but it’s all good, the food is worth it."

Two Sisters Kitchen is a wonderful place to sit back and enjoy good food. As a family business the Two Sisters Kitchen has catered to thousands of locals and tourists for the past 32 years.
