Ten Dillard males are expected to compete in the first “Mr. Image Pageant: More than a Gentleman,” set for 7 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in upper Kearny.
Sponsored by the Freshman Class Council and the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the event will award $100 to the winner, who will be expected to hold a forum on leadership and the definition of a real gentleman, according to Mikcal Todd, one of the coordinators. The winner also is expected to be present at all community service events for the AKA chapter and will receive free entrance into all council and AKA chapter events.
Ten contestants were selected during an informational on Feb. 11 and tryouts on Feb. 18, but officials had only nine names available at press time – one senior, one junior, and seven freshmen. They are senior Jarrod Little; junior Gregory Johnson; and freshmen Lorenzo Baker, DeShawn Dabney, D’Juan Ellsworth, Colby Locks, Mitchell Moffet, Chris Rags and Kenyatta Trim
In addition to deciding who will be “Mr. Image,” one contestant also will be named “Mr. G.Q.”
In addition to poise, appearance, enthusiasm, stage presence and connection with the audience, contestants also will be judge on their extracurricular activities, community service, and character demonstrated from the application.
Tickets are $5 for one or $7 for two people in advance, and $8 at the door. All proceeds will go toward financing the Freshman Council’s “Freshperson Week.”
Members of AKA will serve as hosts and contestant escorts, but the organizers said they also are seeking female volunteers to help decorate and prepare for the event.
