NEW ORLEANS (March 31, 2017) — Elections for new Student Government Association officers and the court is set to be held online next Wednesday, April 5, according to President Tevon Blair, who is unopposed for a second term.
Courtney Williams, director of student engagement and leadership, said no runoff elections will be held this year, so some candidates could win with a plurality rather than a majority vote.
Blair said the vote is tentatively set for online, pending the outcome of a test run of the process.
Destinee Ross was on the ballot to oppose Blair, but she did not attend the speeches and debates Thursday night, a requirement for her candidacy, Blair said.
Four other positions are being filled by unopposed candidates, including: Joseph Caldwell, SGA vice president; Madison Torry, junior class vice president; Akheem Dowl, junior class gentleman; and Brianna Thomas, sophomore class attendant.
Three people are seeking to become 2017-18 Miss Dillard: Sydney Jack, Amanda Newsome and Malaysha Seals.
Two candidates seek the office of Mr. Dillard: Kyle Reiss and William Thompson.
Candidates for other SGA offices include:
- SGA treasurer: Kahlia Columbus and Taj Odem.
- SGA parliamentarian: Leah Erby and Alyssa White.
- Senior class president: Haley James and Dominique Nash.
- Sophomore president: Sidney Benson and John Lawson II.
- Sophomore vice president: Erienne Lewis and Nia Randolph.
- Sophomore secretary: Kayla Hicks and Bria Jones.
Candidates for other court positions include:
- Senior attendant: Faith Flugence, Kimberly Greenwood, Kenya Moore and Victoria Whiteside.
- Junior attendant: Kristiana Coleman, Daralyn Fulton, Alexis Granville and Keadria Miller.
- Sophomore class gentleman: Jomorion Mitchell and Todd Welch.
Blair said no one is running for on- and off-campus representatives because the new constitution eliminated the positions.
Nominations for the 2017-2018 SGA positions were accepted March 16.
To be considered eligible for an SGA elected office, a candidate must have a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade-point average. To be considered eligible for class council, the candidate must have at least a 2.75, have no judicial hearings and meet community service hours for specific to each class.
Freshman class elections are held in the fall.
