Alternative break deposit due Dec. 1

NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 9, 2017) – The first deposit to attend an “alternative spring break” trip to the nation’s capital is due Dec. 1.

Up to 20 students are scheduled to attend the trip March 24-28, which includes community service; sightseeing, including a trip to the African-American Museum; a visit with congressmen on Capitol Hill; and visits to locations connected to career interests, such as graduate schools, law firms, etc.

The cost is $499, including airfare, lodging and two meals a day. Participants will pay for one meal a day and any social outings. The deposit due is $149, and you should have applied last month.

Dr. Roland Bullard, vice president for Student Success, will be one of two site leaders, and his division is hosting what’s being called a “co-curricular experience.”

Bullard said, “We will visit museums, graduate schools and, hopefully, Capitol Hill.”

Alternative spring breaks started in the 1980s as a counter to traditional party spring break trips. It is a trip in which college students engage in volunteer service, educational experiences or some combination.

The first email about the opportunity was sent out Sept.16, with a followup email on Sept.25.
