Two new clubs organized at Dillard

Curvy Girlz, NAACP chapter among 61 groups

On November 9, 2018

NEW ORLEANS (November 9, 2018) – Two new clubs – Curvy Girlz and the DU Chapter of NAACP – have been added this semester to the roster of official Dillard student organizations, which now total 61.

Curvy Girlz, founded by Camryn Johnson, promotes body positivity for men and women of all sizes: curvy, thick, tall, plus-sized and all petite allies. It already has scheduled a series of events, including three this weekend: a “twerk and workout” session at 7 p.m. today in the Student Union Ballroom; a “Glow in the Dark” party, featuring DJ Retro, starting at 10 p.m. Friday in Henson; and a day of service with Mr. and Miss Junior starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The NAACP chapter here actually is being revitalized. Student Brianna Thomas said she worked to re-charter the organization because she wanted to inform students around campus about their best interests and how they are represented through governmental policy and voting.

The chapter will collaborate with other campus organizations for a “March to the Polls” on Voting Day, next Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The more than five dozen clubs on campus represent a variety of interests, from Greek organizations (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority being the largest); to geographical clubs like The Cali Club, founded by Tyler Racklin; to special-interest topic clubs, such as Sister2Sister (Brittany Woodson).

The above are the biggest clubs on campus, according to SGA Vice President John Lawson II.

Students also may select from more traditional major-oriented clubs, such as the American Chemical Society Club or Association of Black Social Workers. The complete list can be found at dillard.campuslabs.com/engage/organizations.

If you’d prefer to start your own, the first step is a meeting with the office of Student Engagement and Leadership to ensure nothing is being duplicated, according to Courtney Williams, director. From there, the student will be provided with resources about recruiting members, creating a constitution and finding an adviser (a requirement).

Once the application is submitted, the SGA Senate must decide to grant approval.
