NEW ORLEANS (September 26, 2019) – A Prichard, Ala., urban studies major and a Houston business major have been elected as president and vice president of the freshman class, according to results provided by the DU Office of Student Engagement.

Jerika Edwards and DeAndre Bell II will lead Dillard’s freshmen student body.

Meanwhile, Chandler McBride, a mass communication major from Seattle, was elected Miss Freshman in online elections Sept. 13. She is joined by Mister Freshman Spencer Jones, an urban studies major from West Memphis, Ark.

Other freshmen officers are:

  • Secretary: Natalie Linney, a Memphis film major.
  • Parliamentarian: Yasha Hughes, a Baton Rouge political science major.
  • Senators: Zaige Willis, a Shreveport physics major, and Ayriah Barr, a Houston criminal justice major.

Some 223 freshmen voted in the 2019 online election. Student government does not have runoff elections, so students can win a position with a plurality of votes rather than a majority.

Edwards defeated six other candidates by receiving 41.25 percent of the votes. Bell bested three opponents by obtaining 54.26 percent of the votes.

Linney outperformed Harriston Turk with 53.81 percent compared to Turk’s 46.18 percent. Willis and Barr polled 65.46 percent of the votes while their opponents – Aaron Brown, Faythe Huffman and Tamira Guillard – received 14.79 percent, 14.79 percent and 4.93 percent respectively. Hughes ran unopposed.

Nominations for the 2019-2020 freshmen positions were accepted Aug. 30.

Other Student Government Association elections will be held in the spring.
