NEW ORLEANS (January 24, 2022) – Dillard’s Intramural Sports is expanding its offerings beyond flag football, introducing basketball, volleyball and kickball this semester, according to DU-IT Sports President JaKiyah Steinbrook.

Informational sessions and tryouts for volleyball and basketball will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The first Kickball Saturday, open to all students, is set for 1 p.m. Saturday on the Presidential Lawn; Steinbrook said in the event of inclement weather, students will play dodgeball in Dent Gym. Kickball will have males and females compete on opposing teams

Volleyball: The volleyball informational and tryouts will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in Dent Hall gymnasium.  Students can sign up with their own teams to play in tournaments on campus and/or try out to join the DU-IT Sports team to compete against other area college intramural teams.

Basketball: The basketball informational and tryouts will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday in Dent Hall. The scenario is the same as volleyball: Students can sign up with their own teams to play in tournaments on campus and/or try out to join the DU-IT Sports team to compete against other area college intramural teams.

Bleu Babes: Students can try out next week from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 1-2 in the Student Union Ballroom to stomp, shake and cheer for intramural teams.

​​Keriana Rogers, a freshman criminal justice major from Port Arthur, Texas, who is a member of Bleu Babes, said the cheer team and intramural sports add “an extra level of spirit to the Dillard University community.”

Steinbrook said Kickball Saturdays are planned for every two weeks, and the schedules for all events in February and March are being finalized; the season will end in mid-April. She added that several matchups are being scheduled against rivals, such as Xavier University, Southern University of New Orleans and area police department teams.

Steinbrook, a senior chemistry major from St. Louis, called intramural sports “a fun way to enjoy college” and interact with fellow students – “a small highlight of what the old Dillard used to be” before the pandemic. 

According to Steinbrook, Dillard University was the first institution in Louisiana to develop an intramural sports program, when Dr. William Wasson created the program in 1948.
